Hubert Lemire's Biography / Biographie d'Hubert Lemire

***************

Hubert Lemire: Born on August 15, 1925 in Cobalt, Ontario, deceased on May 28, 2003 in Sudbury, Canada, where he was residing. Son of Léo Lemire and Eva Pressé, loving husband of Gilberte Lemire (Danis) and loving father to his children Suzanne, Robert, Louise, Claudette, Lucille, Léo and Nicole and brother to Arthur, Albert, Maria, Yvette, Irène, Jeannine, Simone and Aurele.

The story is told that his eight siblings were annoyed with him at times, as they had to raise funds as young children in order for Hubert to attend university. One of their activities growing up with him was to pick blueberries in the summer months and sell these to collect money for his future studies. The family’s dedication and hard work paid off and Hubert paved a road that led to roles in leadership and high management positions throughout his career. His six living children were fortunate enough to live overseas and experience memorable adventures that will last a lifetime.

Graduate of Montreal University with a Master in Business Administration degree, with honours, and a Master in Industrial Relations, Hubert Lemire had leading roles in several companies during his career, including Ayers Limited in Lachute, Quebec. He moved his family to Sudbury in 1961 to become Laurentian Universities’ first Administrator and Treasurer until 1973. He then went to work for the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) in Butare, Rwanda and in Haiti. In 1977, he returned to Sudbury to work with the Provincial Government until January 1979. Working for CIDA, he managed a development project, the DRIPP, in Petit Goave, Haiti until 1980. Upon his return from the Caribbean, he celebrated his retirement. This was short lived as Hubert and his wife Gilberte purchased Leo's Motel in Sudbury. After 5 years in the hotel industry, Hubert tried his hand at retirement once again but could not resist for very long! He accepted his last contract with CIDA in Mali. In between retiring three times, he also worked for employment development projects for FedNord in Northern Ontario. Officially retired, Hubert decided to dedicate his golden years to his wife Gilberte, his 6 children, his 17 grandchildren, and many dear and long-time friends.

Devoted to his family and his work, Hubert Lemire was a generous and passionate person who aimed to succeed, always emphasizing on honesty and integrity.

Today, this foundation is created as an extension of his hard work, dedication and passion. FHL is the reflection of Hubert's love of giving back and understanding that nothing is taken for granted, and that education is at the core of success.

FHL wishes to develop and grow through his vision of hope for a better tomorrow through perseverance and courage.

With his love of trees, he admired fruit trees that he planted over the years (such as apple and pear trees), but he had especially a soft spot for his favourite; the blue spruce.

Today, FHL's main goal is to preserve the environment, its trees, and help mankind to live in a better place through knowledge, education, micro-financing for new entrepreneurs and reforestation in Haiti.
